JIMU News (Reporter Guan Qianyu, Correspondent Liu Yanli, Xu Fanjing) Recently, several heartwarming photos were widely shared on social media by faculty and students at Hubei University of Medicine: a man knelt on a busy road, carefully checking the injuries of a woman lying on the road. Zhu Zhiwu, the rescuer in the photo and a faculty member of the university, said calmly: “It’s nothing worth mentioning” in response to the outpouring of praise.

Around 4:00 pm on April 26, while driving with his family along the Hanjiang Normal University section of the Beijing Road in Shiyan city, Zhu Zhiwu suddenly noticed a woman lying in the middle of the road. At that time, some passersby had gathered around but no one dared to approach the woman because of the heavy traffic and uncertainty about her injuries. The scene was fraught with danger.

“Someone is hurt!” Amid the emergency, Zhu Zhiwu promptly pulled his car over to a safe area, told his family to stay there, then dashed through streams of oncoming traffic toward the injured person. As traffic police were maintaining on-site order, Zhu Zhiwu immediately stepped forward and identified himself: “I am a staff member of Hubei University of Medicine with professional first-aid training. Let me help!”

Thirty-eight-year-old Zhu Zhiwu works as a laboratory technician at the Higher Education Research Institute under the Faculty Teaching Development Center of Hubei University of Medicine. He holds a first aid training certificate issued by the American Heart Association (AHA). Just nine days earlier, the university had held a first-aid training session, and those very skills were now being put to use. At the scene, the victim kept her eyes tightly closed, with a flushed face. She appeared confused and emotionally agitated, her breathing rapid and her mouth twitching.

Zhu Zhiwu softened his tone and patiently comforted the injured person: “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to help you. The ambulance will be here soon.” His gentle words gradually dispelled the victim’s panic. When she tried to get up, Zhu gently pressed her shoulder and said, “You must not move right now. If you have a fracture or internal injury, moving around could cause further harm. Let’s wait for the medics.” He then asked about her discomfort while carefully examining the wounds.

During the ten-plus minutes awaiting the ambulance, Zhu Zhiwu stayed by her side, keeping constant watch over her. When the ambulance arrived, he thoroughly briefed the paramedics on the victim’s level of consciousness and the preliminary treatment administered, and helped to smoothly lift the woman onto the ambulance. He returned to his car only after the ambulance drove off and the siren had long faded.

Afterwards, photos of Zhu Zhiwu rescuing the injured woman circulated on social media, and only then did his colleagues get word of this “unsung hero.” In response to the positive comments, he said modestly, “To relieve suffering and save lives is the duty of a medical professional, and also the responsibility and commitment of us at Hubei University of Medicine. I simply used the first-aid knowledge I learned where it was needed.”
